North Korea Questions.

1. What is the official name of Korea.- The Democratic Peoples republic of korea
http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/bgn/2792.htm
2. Who is the head of North Korea-  The head of North Korea is Kim Jong il

Soviet records state thatKim Jong il was born in Vyatskoye near Khabarovsk in 1941. His father was Kim Sung II and his mother is Kim Jong Suk. His official biography says he was born in a secret military camp on a mountain base on Baekdu Mountain. By the time WWII ended he was about four years old. He went to college at Kim II Sung university and majored in Political Economy. He then rose quickly through the Korean Workers Party soon after graduation. He then became chief of the Party Central Committee. He became ruler of North Korea in 1997 after his father died. Kim Jong il is a leader who is aggressive. He wants to build nuclear weapons and he also is very sick and there are many conflicting reports on whether he is even alive or dead.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kim_Jong-il
3. Brief History of Country-  Korea was separated into two countries after WWII ended in 1945. This ended Japans rule over Korea. In 1948 North Korea refused to enter the election with the South and this created two different governments. After the two countries were split the Soviet left the country on their own after a while. Then the North Korean war began. Soviet Russia supplied North Korea with troops and supplies to invade South Korea and take it over. We also supported South Korea to fight the war. This also started the Cold War. At one point South Korea was almost completely took over by North Korea and then we fought back. By the end it was a waste because almost nothing changed. Still today relations between the United States and North Korea are very tense. Many small border wars happened and tunnels were found underground the DMZ. Also North Korea tried to kill many South Korean leaders. Today North Korea is still building Nukes and even attacked South Korea just this year killing 4 people.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Korea

4. Show where your country is on a regional map?We are the northern country highlighted in red. The country to the south is South Korea. http://www.pbs.org/newshour/indepth_coverage/asia/northkorea/map_flash.html
5.  What other countries and bodies of water does your country border?North Korea borders South Korea, China, a little bit of Russia, the Korean Bay, the sea of Japan, and the Yellow Sea.  http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/time-zone/asia/north-korea/map.htm
6. What is the 38th Parallel?-The 38th parralell is really just 38 degrees north latitude. This is also used as the dividing line for north and south Korea. It was established as the border in 1945.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/38th_parallel_north
7. What is your relationship like between your Korea and the other Korea? The relatioship between North and South Korea is very tense. They both could go to war with each other at any second.North Korea has attacked South Korea. North Korea hopes to unify the two countries but is upset at South Korea relationship with the U.S.http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/bgn/2792.htm
8. Describe what its like on your countries side of the DMZ. In North Korea your life span is 14 years shorter than in South Korea and you have worse healthcare. North Korea only spends one dollar on healthcare per person while South Korea spends over 1000 dollars per person. Also you would consume almost 95 percent less energy in North Korea, this is including Oil, and electricity. Finally you have a 10 times higher chance of dying in childbirth but have 60 percent more children.

9. What does the UN think of your relations with the other Korea? The UN feels that the situation in North Korea is very tense at the moment. They believe that it is very dangerous and that South Korea is in danger. They hope to help settle tensions between the two nations before something bad happens.
10.The major city in North Korea is Pongyang because it is the largest city and the capital of North Korea.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Korea
11.What is the role of the military?  The role of the military in North Korea is to build up and show themselves off as a powerful country. They are not currently in any wars but they easily could get in a war with South Korea soon as tension between the two countries is very high at the moment. Along with that the army could be used to scare South Korea due to its size. Also the Koreans military technology is very outdated and old. Most of their military is pushed up on the DMZ.http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/bgn/2792.htm
12. What is the role of nuclear weaponry? The role of nuclear weapons for North Korea is also to scare south Korea and the rest of the world and increase North Koreas military power. North Korea wants to scare people by having Nukes and they might even end up using them on South Korea. It has also been thought they might give some to other terrorist countries. North Korea has also tested some of their Nukes.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Korea_and_weapons_of_mass_destruction
13.Who are your Koreas main superpower allies? North Koreas main allies are China and Russia who are communist( china) and Federation( Russia). http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/bgn/2792.htm#relations
14.Can people enter your country freely? Why or why not? Citizens of North Korea arent allowed to leave North Korea because the government wont allow them and also they dont want because they have been brainwashed to believe that North Korea is great. Visitors can enter the country but will be followed by a North Korean at all times to watch them. They will also only be shown certain parts of North Korea so visitors are very controlled. Even at this it is very difficult to visit North Korea It is like this because North Korea doesnt want people to k now what its really like in Korea and they dont want citizens to know what the rest of the world is really like..http://wikitravel.org/en/North_Korea#Stay_healthyhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_rights_in_North_Korea
15. What is your countries human rights record? North Koreas human rights arent too good. They dont have real freedom of speech and speaking against the goverment can result in arrest. They also dont have freedom of religion because they fear it could lead to a revolt. They have no freedom of press and everything is controlled by the government. Also normal citizens cant travel freely around North Korea.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_rights_in_North_Korea
16. What is the role of the press in your country? The press in North Korea is completely controlled by the Government. Everything on TV, in newspapers, and on the radio is made by the government. The citizens are fed propanganda this way and this is just another way of brainwashing North Koreas Citizens.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_rights_in_North_Korea#Freedom_of_the_press
17. How do elections work in your country?Elections in North Korea are held every five years. They consist of canditates from three parties but the Workers party of Korea dominates them all. They are almost always elected. The Democratic front selects the people to enter office and the citizens say yes or no to the choice in this way the citizens dont select their leaders but simple agree to the choices.
18.What is your Koreas view on the US.  North Korea hates the Unites States. They view us as the people who seperated Korea into two and made South Korea the way it is in terms of government. They see us as a weak and pathetic country who are messed up.http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/bgn/2792.htm#relations http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Korea
19.How is your countries economy? My country has a econonmy that is completely controlled by the government. The countries economy declined after the fall of the Svoiet union and other Communist states. The economy has begin to rise back up a bit but only modestly. This is due to more relations with the other Korea. North Korean industry is running at a small output due to the lack of fuel and extra parts. The http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/bgn/2792.htm#econhttps://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/kn.html
My country agriculture industry makes up 21.6 of North Koreas GDP. The North Korean infrstructure is horrible. Also bad food production led to many famines in the 1990s. The GDP for North Korea is 40 billion dollars, 96th in the world. The GDP per capita is 1,800 dollars so people dont make a lot of money.

19. Does you Korea have religious freedom and what religions make up your Korea? North Korea has people of Buddhist, confuscionist, Christian, and Syncretic religion. North Korea attempts to give the illusion that they have religious freedom but they really dont use it.The government has government religious groups to give the illusion that religious freedom exists in North Korea. In reality the government says that have it but they dont advise you to practice religion unless under supervision of a government group. This means that the governement  basically controls what religion you follow therefore not making this true freedom of religion.https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/kn.html

21. What happened on Novermber 23rd 2010 that is so important to both Koreas? On November 23rd 2010 North Korea shot South Korea with artillery killing 4 people and injuring 19 more. North Korea said artillery shells from a South Korean artiller execrise landed in their waters so they shot artillery and rockets at south korea. This is so important because tensions between the two countries escalated a lot after this event.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Korea_%E2%80%93_South_Korea_relations#2010_sinking_of_a_South_Korean_naval_vessel

22.  What do Lisa and Laura Ling have to do with North Korea?Lisa Ling and Laura ling are two sisters that have reported on events in North Korea. Lisa ling is the person who was on the video we are watching about North Korea. She went undercover and reported on th events happening in North Korea which are usually covered up. Her sister Laura was imprisoned in North Korea for entering the country illegally through China after she tried to film refugees on the border with China. She was supposed to be put in labor camp for 15 years but was released with the help of the U.S. They are both American.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lisa_Linghttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laura_Ling
