2. List five facts about Mumbai India.

Bombay was renamed Mumbai in 1996
Mumbai is the capital of Maharashtra
The largest metropolitan city in India
Mumbai is a big part of Bollywood and a lot of actors/ artists come here
Population is 18 million and is projected to rise to 28.5 million in 2020
3. What is Dharavi?
Dharavi is a humongous slum in Mumbai. It is a shanti town in Mumbai where over 18,000 people live on one acre of land and there are many more people. It is sometimes referred to as the largest slum in Asia but there are even more shanti towns in Mumbai almost as big as Dharavi. In Mumbai over 12 million people live in this informal housing all over Mumbai. That is more  than half the population of Mumbai. Before Dharavi was a slum it was a swamp that served as a fishing ground. When the swamp filled up with waste from humans, surrounding waste, and trash the fishermen left. Many workers came in after this including potters, textile workers, and tanneries to name a few. This would come to create one of the most diverse slums in Mumbai. It is now a horrible slum in Mumba and very crowded and dirty.
4. A shantytown is a slum where poor residents live in crowded conditions in houses made of garbage. They are very dirty and very poorly made. They are also big polluters because they dump all their trash into the rivers.
5. Who is Amitabh Bachchan and what does he have to do with Slumdog millionaire?
Amitabh is a famous Indian actor for bollywood.  He was a guest star in slumdog millionaire posing as himself in the movie. He was also a question on KBC. He bashed the movie though saying he didnt like how it portrayed India as being all slums.
6. What is Bollywood?
Bollywood is the name for the film industry in India. The term was created by combining the city Bombay( mumbai) and hollywood. The films Bollywood creates are ususally musicals. They also consist of meoldramatic plots. The films attract actors from all over India from the rich, to regular, and poor all hoping to break into the film industry. There is one problem with Bollywood though and thats when people steal films and show them for free. This causes the industry to lose a lot of money. This spells a lot of trouble for bollywood.
7. How much is 250,00 rupees( or any amount) in American dollars.
One rupee is equal to .0218 american dollars. This shows that their money is better than ours and in better economic condition in that aspect. so that makes 250,000 rupees worth 5450 dollars a huge difference.

This came from http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/14/world/asia/14india.html?ref=terrorism. The next attack came from New Dehli also. The day before Indias Republic day celebrations. Two pakastani militants were killed in a shootout in a suburb of New Dehli. They were seupposively hard core pakistan terrorists and were heavilt armed with assault rifles and grenades. this came from http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/26/world/asia/26india.html?ref=terrorism

  6. Briefly describe the effects of monsoons on India. Monsoons have deadly effects on India and its people. They kill hundreds of people from floods everytime they strike. Monsoons are extremely deadly and a big problem in India.
  7. What are some problems India has getting clean water to their people? India has many problems with getting clean water to residents. First off there are so many people in India at times they don't have enough clean water for everyone. This is because most of the water is dirty whihc brings me to my next point. That is most of their water is runined by sludge, sewage, and waste being dumped in the river. This renders a lot of the water undrinkable. Finaly they don't have a good sewage system to get rid of sewage or a good water system to distribute water. These are some reasons why India has difficulty distrubuting clean water.
  8. What is the literacy rate in India? The literacy rate in India is 61 percent for the total population.
